the best out of our egg tart hunt, and we were lucky to catch the opening at exactly 1pm (their opening hours change everyday so it is unpredictable and the store garners a long line right before opening). $3.75 for one is on the pricier end but it was well worth (probably because it was also piping hot and fresh) -- the custard was so flavorful, smooth and soft without crumbling everywhere. the crust was meticulously folded, flaky and buttery!
God tier egg tart. The crust is slightly flaky, with an amazing combination of caramelization and a salty hit. Complete addicting, and I wish every pie had this crust. Egg custard is just set, plenty soft and juicy inside (I know, it sounds weird, but trust me) Will come back to try the coconut tart and the special macadamia cookie (usually 3 for $6 but she will sell 1 for $3 too)
Golden Gate Bakery is to egg tart as Arsicault is to croissant. This is a Chinatown classic. The egg tarts here are eggs-ellent. Served warm and flakey. I feel spoiled growing up with this as the standard since childhood. No other egg tart compares. Unfortunately, business hours are odd (seeming to open up whenever they want at random times), and the last time I had this was 2/24/2024 during the Chinese New Year period. My husband, also a huge foodie, stated these were the best he's ever had as well. Next time I'm in Chinatown, I will definitely stop by again.
Located in Chinatown this is definitely a favorite as it has the longest line waiting outside. They only have a few items so we tried a moon cake, ask for no yolk if you don't want it in it. Ours was red bean and walnuts which was the best item in my opinion. The egg tart was also delicious and popular while the coconut tart was good but didn't compare to the other two items. Make sure you have cash as you order and get your items outside the front door. The lady who helped us was very nice and helpful.
Golden Gate Bakery in San Francisco's Chinatown is a true gem. Let me preface this review by saying it's a 5-star experience, but be prepared for a unique adventure. Note - I've visited this bakery many times in the past, but I've always been unlucky - either they were closed or completely sold out. First things first: it's cash only. Thankfully, there's a Chase Bank with an ATM right across the street, saving you from any scrambling. Secondly, forget about set hours. This bakery operates on its own delicious schedule, opening at 11 am, and closing whenever they sell out. We stumbled upon it on a whim after lunch, drawn by a short line outside - our only clue it was actually open that day. The wait was surprisingly short, only about 5 minutes. Here's where things get interesting: they only offer three treats - custard tarts, coconut tarts, and mooncakes (depending on the season). Each individual pastry is $3.75, or you can snag a dozen for $45. There's no indoor or outdoor seating, so be prepared to enjoy your treat on the go. But oh, those custard tarts! They're worth every penny and every minute of waiting. The silky smooth custard is simply divine. Rich egg flavor, perfectly balanced sweetness, a slight wobble on top, and piping hot and fresh - it's a textural and taste bud explosion. The crust is the perfect complement - light, crispy, and flaky. Golden Gate Bakery might be a bit unconventional, but it's an experience that shouldn't be missed. Embrace the cash-only adventure, the mystery of its hours, and most importantly, savor those incredible custard tarts. You won't be disappointed!
